Mavericks, Suns trade grades for 2026 NBA Draft deal involving Koa Peat

The NBA Draft was full of movement in the second half of the first round, and it involved a trade after almost every selection. One of those trades involved the Dallas Mavericks and Phoenix Suns, as the Mavericks acquired the No. 25 pick (Sergio De Larrea). The Suns received the No. 30 pick (Koa Peat), and the New York Knicks were also involved in the trade, acquiring five second-round picks and cash considerations.

It looks like all the teams were able to walk away with what they wanted, and the Mavericks still have a chance to add to their roster on Wednesday with the second-round pick they received.

For now, here are some trade grades from the Mavericks and Suns.

Mavericks get guard depth

It’s been a busy week for the Mavericks, hiring Dusty May as their new head coach a day before the draft. With the No. 9 pick, they selected Morez Johnson Jr., reuniting the Michigan forward with his college coach. The Mavericks then decided to make the trade to acquire the N0. 25 pick, which turned out to be De Larrea, a guard who has been playing overseas for the past few years.

It’s uncertain what the Mavericks have planned for De Larrea, but more details will probably come out when the trade is officially announced.

Suns add forward depth

Peat was the Suns’ only selection in the first round of the draft, and it’s not a bad selection. There were questions about the Arizona forward coming into the draft, and there were thoughts that he may have taken his name out of the pool at one point. Luckily, he stayed in the draft, and what he was able to do with the Wildcats should translate in the league, as he averaged 14.5 points and 5.9 rebounds this past season.

The Suns need frontcourt depth, and that’s what Peat will bring to the roster.
