Mavericks’ Sergio De Larrea flashes skills with Summer League double-double

The Dallas Mavericks have some interesting young blood coming in, with Morez Johnson Jr. and Sergio De Larrea coming in as exciting prospects for a team looking to get back to contending ways built on the expected ascent of Cooper Flagg. And during Summer League action on Monday, it was De Larrea who stole the show for the Mavericks as they nabbed a 96-88 victory over the Cameron Boozer/Cedric Coward-led Memphis Grizzlies.

De Larrea took over as the Mavericks’ primary ballhandler and playmaker on the night and he did not disappoint. He finished with 16 points and 12 assists on the night, which is an outstanding display for the 20-year-old whom the Mavericks picked up with the 25th overall selection of the 2026 NBA Draft.

At 6’5″, De Larrea has solid size for either guard position, and this allows him to see over defenders, making the most of his great feel on the ball. He did turn the ball over four times, but he put his teammates in a position to succeed so many times on the night that it was promising for the Mavs to see the rookie assert himself.

Considering how the Mavericks roster had been screaming for more playmaking around Flagg, especially amid Kyrie Irving’s injury, De Larrea is profiling as a very important player for the team, assuming, of course, that he develops according to plan.

It is early days in De Larrea’s career, but he did spend the past four seasons with Valencia of the Liga ACB in Europe. The 20-year-old had been playing with grown men for nearly the past half-decade, and this should certainly help in making him much more NBA-ready than some realize.

It can be a bit premature to celebrate the performances of young players when they come in Summer League, but the Mavs have to be well pleased with what they’re seeing from the guard out of Spain.
