Mason Mount sparks new injury fears by limping out of Man United pre-season game

Mason Mount was forced off with an injury scare during Manchester United’s pre-season clash with Paris Saint-Germain.

The 27-year-old has been blighted by fitness issues since his move to Old Trafford in 2023, but was named in Michael Carrick‘s starting XI as they took on the European champions in Gothenburg.

But there was no let-up for Mount in the pre-season fixture, as he pulled up early on and was unable to continue.

The 27-year-old then had to be replaced by Tyler Fletcher in yet more concerning scenes.

After exiting the field, Mount could be seen deep in conversation with members of United’s medical staff.

He then made his way down the tunnel, in a familiar sight for Red Devils supporters.

Man United were 1-0 down to a youthful PSG side when Mount was forced off, with Liverpool target Ibrahim Mbaye putting the Champions League winners in front within two minutes.

But Carrick’s side responded soon after, as Bryan Mbeumo equalised shortly after the half-hour mark.

In the wars

Injuries have plagued Mount’s Man United career, preventing him from reaching the standards he set at previous club Chelsea.

The Cobham academy graduate joined the Red Devils in a £60million deal in 2023.

However, since then he has spent a staggering 394 days on the sidelines, causing him to miss both Euro 2024 and this summer’s World Cup with England.

Mount has made just 72 appearances for United, but made his most appearances in a Premier League campaign for the club last term.

The England midfielder featured 23 times in the league, scoring three goals, although he was mainly used by former boss Ruben Amorim in the first half of the season.

This has led to rumours he could join Amorim at new club AC Milan, although Mount has been part of United’s pre-season group so far.

Make or break?

Mount’s latest setback against PSG come after talkSPORT’s Shebahn Aherne suggested that the upcoming season was make-or-break for him in his career.

“He needs to have a strong season,” Aherne said of Mount.

“Luke Shaw played every game last season and really got his season back on track, sorted out the injury issues and he was brilliant.

“But Mason Mount, you always hear that he’s the perfect pupil. He’s a very smart and intelligent player and when he’s on his game. He’s brilliant.

“You just hope that this season he will come good.”

talkSPORT’s Tony Cascarino was also hopeful the 27-year-old could find his level again and highlighted one of his key attributes.

He said: “They paid £55m for him. He was injured at Chelsea before he got to Old Trafford and he was a terrific player for Chelsea.

“He can play in that floating position like [Florian] Wirtz and he can get a goal.

“Manchester United need a really fit Mason Mount, if not to start, then to challenge for other player’s spots in the team.

“He’s a good finisher, get him in goalscoring positions and he will finish. It would be like a new signing.”
