Mariners get pitcher back from injury before Athletics clash
The Seattle Mariners are scheduled to face off against the Athletics at 9:40 p.m. EST on Tuesday. Hours before the start of the game, the club received good news regarding a relief pitcher’s injury, as the team will be adding a player to the bullpen.
Reports indicate that Gabe Speier is being activated off the 15-day IL and will join the Mariners roster on Tuesday. Speier was previously dealing with left shoulder inflammation. In a corresponding move, Seattle is optioning right-handed pitcher Nick Davila to Triple-A Tacoma.
“Roster moves: Gabe Speier, LHP, reinstated from 15-day Injured List (left shoulder inflammation),” announced the Mariners PR team on X. “Nick Davila, RHP, optioned to Triple-A Tacoma (post-game May 25).”
Speier, who is 31 years old, should reclaim a prominent role in the bullpen for the Mariners. He’s been a consistent option as a reliever throughout most of his eight-year career in MLB. Speier rejoins the roster with a 2.92 ERA and 1.541 WHIP this season while totaling 12 strikeouts through 12.1 innings pitched.
While his WHIP is a bit concerning, it hasn’t led to many poor performances for Gabe Speier so far this season. He also has plenty of time to bring it back down as the campaign progresses. Either way, Speier will make a nice addition to an already solid pitching group in Seattle.
Although he was brought back to the roster, it is not clear whether or not Speier will play against the Athletics on Tuesday. It will likely depend on how the game is playing out before manager Dan Wilson decides which pitchers will come out of the bullpen against the Athletics.
