Manchester United miss chance to sign £52m star who stars on World Cup debut

Manchester United could regret not choosing to pursue their interest in German left-back Nathaniel Brown.

The 22-year-old scored for Germany as they thrashed debutants Curacao 7-1 to make a winning start to their World Cup campaign.

Brown fired into the bottom corner with 68 minutes on the clock to net his country’s fifth goal at the NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas.

He currently plays his club football at Eintracht Frankfurt, but looks set to move elsewhere in the Bundesliga this summer.

Brown is close to joining German champions Bayern Munich in a deal worth around €60million (£52m).

The defender was on United’s list of left-back targets, but has already agreed personal terms with Bayern.

Sunday’s match against Curacao saw Brown make only his sixth international appearance for Germany since his debut in October.

He played 73 minutes of the resounding victory before David Raum was brought on in his place.

Germany now lead Group E after their opener, with Ivory Coast and Ecuador playing their match at 12am UK time on June 15.

United’s summer transfer plans

Ederson looks set to become United’s first signing of the summer in £38.8m move from Atalanta.

The midfielder, who received a late call-up to the World Cup with Brazil, will sign a contract until 2030 with the option of an extra year.

talkSPORT also understands that Mateus Fernandes has given the green light to move to Old Trafford.

Fernandes was a shining light for the West Ham side who were relegated from the Premier League.

United have made him their top target in midfield after choosing not to get into a bidding war with Manchester City for Elliot Anderson.

The arrivals of Ederson and Fernandes would help fill the void left by Casemiro amid his pending free transfer to Inter Miami.

Furthermore, United are willing to sell Manuel Ugarte for £25m ahead of next season.

Andre Onana also looks set to be sold this summer, as well as Marcus Rashford after their respective loans at Trabzonspor and Barcelona.

Barca had an option to buy Rashford on a permanent deal for £26m, but this clause expires on Monday and they are unlikely to activate it.
