Manager’s Mason Miller-Max Scherzer comparison will catch Padres fans’ attention
The law of averages is starting to kick in for San Diego Padres starting pitcher, Mason Miller. Make no mistake, Miller still poses the threat as one of the best closers in the league. Outside of two starts, he’s been pretty much untouchable. At some point, teams are going to find success.
Earlier in the week, Miller committed his first career error on a pick-off attempt to first base against the Los Angeles Dodgers. He would go on to blow his first save of the season. Despite this, Miller still has a 0.79 ERA, 0.84 WHIP, and is second in the league with 15 saves. He has 45 strikeouts in 22.2 innings on the year. Walks have been his main issue, with nine total and four in the last week.
Padres manager Craig Stammen joined MLB Network Radio on SiriusXM and talked about Miller’s overall dominance. Stammen also compared Miller to his former teammate, Max Scherzer.
“What Max Scherzer puts into making a start, that’s what Mason Miller is putting into closing a game.”

“What we saw earlier in the season was him at his peak,” Stammen said. “Being absolutely nails where he isn’t walking anybody, not throwing balls, tons of swing and miss, and nobody getting on base. Now we’re like, one base runner… What is going on?…”
“We love having Mason on our team. The best thing about Mason is how tough he is mentally and physically. We always see the velocity and how nasty his slider is, but who he is as a person and as a teammate, you couldn’t ask for anyone better. I played with Max Scherzer, what Max Scherzer puts into making a start, that’s what Mason Miller is putting into closing a game.”
Max Scherzer is a future Hall of Fame pitcher, still giving it a go at age 41. If you are being compared to Scherzer in terms of approach, you are going to have a lot of success.
