Hibs get their 2026-27 campaign underway this week with a trip to Kosovo to take on Malisheva, following the Edinburgh side’s fifth placed finish in the Scottish Premiership last season.

David Gray’s side were almost an ever present in that fifth place finish last season, having held down the spot since late November to nail down Scotland’s final European spot.

Thursday’s match will signal the start of the Hibees’ second successive European campaign and their fourth in six years, but haven’t been able to reach the group stage/first round of a European competition since 2005.

They came close last year, defeating Partizan Belgrade in a memorable tie before just missing out in a 5-4 aggregate defeat against Legia Warsaw in the play-off of last year’s Conference League.

Malisheva, who were only founded in 2016, and usually play in a 2,000 seater stadium in central Kosovo, are competing in the Conference League for the third season in succession now following their second place finish last season, the highest in the club’s short history.

Managed by Thomas Brdaric, who played for Germany in Euro 2004, the former Bayer Leverkusen striker has led the Kosovan side to their first ever aggregate victory in Europe this summer, having defeated Albanian side Vllaznia Shkoder 6-2 on aggregate despite having lost the first leg 2-1.

Thursday night’s game against Hibs will be the first time Malisheva will have ever played in the second qualifying round of a European competition, their match being moved from their home stadium to the national stadium in Pristina, the Kosovan capital city.
