Magic rumors: Is Jamahl Mosley’s job safe Magic finish off Pistons upset?
The Orlando Magic are on the verge of upsetting the No. 1 seeded Detroit Pistons in their opening round series of the NBA playoffs, leading to some speculation as to what that means for head coach Jamahl Mosley’s potential job security if they do pull off the upset. Coming into the postseason, rumors swirled that Mosley was on the hot seat and following what was expected to be an early playoff exit, the franchise was going to be parting ways.
But if the Magic do complete the upset of the Pistons and advance in the playoffs, it still doesn’t necessarily mean that Jamahl Mosley is safe as head coach, as per ClutchPoints’ NBA insider Brett Siegel. During a recent episode of ‘Clutch Scoops,’ Siegel reiterated his belief that changes are coming to the Magic this offseason in some form whether that be coaching or personnel moves.
“Jamahl Mosley, entering the play-in, the expectation was that he was going to be fired and that they were going to be moving on from him as their head coach,” Siegel reported. “Obviously going up on the Pistons the way that they did, changed a lot of peoples’ viewpoints. There’s been a lot of discourse around the league of whether or not he’ll keep his job.
“It still comes down to this series. If they wind up blowing this 3-1 lead and they lose to the Pistons, it does seem like there’s going to be a coaching change. But if they win and they move on, it’s not to say Mosley’s safe, but he’s in a much safer position. And I think there’s going to be some changes in Orlando this offseason whether that’s personnel, coaching, whatever.”
Mosley is in his fifth season as head coach of the Magic. The team missed the playoffs during his first two years, but have made the postseason in three straight now, albeit not being able to advance past the opening round.
