The Reds opened their summer schedule with a victory over Sunderland in Nashville at the weekend before travelling to the Big Apple for the second fixture of a three-match tour across the USA.

Saturday’s outing also marked the first match of Andoni Iraola’s reign after the Spaniard arrived from Bournemouth to replace Arne Slot, whose two-year spell at Anfield ended despite guiding Liverpool to a second Premier League title in his first season.

Several players involved at this summer’s World Cup have yet to report back for pre-season duty, meaning Iraola remains without a number of senior internationals. However, Dominik Szoboszlai, Hugo Ekitike and new recruit Jeremy Jacquet are all expected to feature.

Liverpool recovered from falling behind to begin the Iraola era with an entertaining 4-2 success over Sunderland. Academy prospect Kieran Morrison opened the scoring before second-half strikes from Szoboszlai, Federico Chiesa and Lewis Koumas completed the turnaround.

After facing Wrexham, Liverpool will conclude their American tour against Leeds in Chicago before returning to Anfield for home friendlies against Monaco and Como. Their competitive campaign then gets underway with a trip to Newcastle on 23 August.

Wrexham also head into the second match of their US tour looking to extend an encouraging pre-season as they gear up for a second successive Championship campaign.

Phil Parkinson’s side began the summer with a goalless draw against Wisla Krakow in Poland before recording an eye-catching 1-0 victory over Manchester United in Finland. They have since travelled to America, where they defeated Premier League opposition once again by overcoming Leeds 3-2 in Tampa on Saturday.

The Red Dragons have yet to add any new faces during the transfer window, reflecting the club’s confidence in a squad that secured promotion last season and is now chasing a remarkable fourth promotion in five years – one that would take Wrexham into the top flight for the first time in their history.

Parkinson has close to a full strength squad available, with Libby Cacace and Dom Hyam both back after representing New Zealand and Scotland respectively at the 2026 World Cup before exiting in the group stage.

Following Wednesday’s encounter, Wrexham will round off their North American schedule against Sunderland in Chester, Pennsylvania, before returning to the UK ahead of their League Cup opener away to Middlesbrough on 7 August.

The clubs have not met competitively since a League Cup quarter-final in 1978, when Kenny Dalglish struck a hat-trick to send Liverpool through en route to the final. Their most recent meeting came in a 2007 pre-season friendly at the Racecourse Ground, where the Reds claimed a 3-2 victory.

The Welsh side have impressed have impressed hugely in their pre-season matches, but Liverpool’s strength in depth should prove too strong for the Championship team, even without many of their international stars – a 3-2 Liverpool win perhaps looking most plausible.

Both sides nicknamed the Reds go head to head in the Big Apple tonight, and despite Wrexham having impressed in their friendlies so far, albeit being at a different stage to most of their opponents with their season starting next week, Liverpool’s squad strength should shine through.

The Championship side have beaten both Manchester United and Leeds in the last fortnight so will absolutely fancy their chances at another big pre-season scalp.

Iraola’s side will still be all be desperate to impress their new manager though, and will be confident following their win over Sunderland last week and with World Cup stars slowly starting to return to the squad, the fringe players will be determined to state their case for a spot in the first team ahead of the new campaign.

Koumas improving his reputation

With Alexander Isak having only just joined back up with the squad following his extended break after Sweden’s World Cup exit, and Hugo Ekitike still making his way slowly back from injury, academy starlet Lewis Koumas could be in for a start in the number nine position.

The Wales international, who plays mostly as a winger and spent last season on loan at both Birmingham and Hull, earning promotion to the Premier League via the play-offs in the latter for whom he scored against Wrexham last season just four months ago.

The 20-year-old has made only one senior competitive appearance for Liverpool, in which he opened the scoring in a 3-0 win over Southampton in an FA Cup tie in February 2024, and played the second half in the Reds’ win over Sunderland in Nashville on the weekend, scoring the final goal in a 4-2 win.

Tonight’s match will be both teams’ second matches on their three-match tour of the USA, and both sides’ opening games produced plenty of goals and entertainment.

Liverpool got the better of fellow Premier League side Sunderland in a 4-2 win, while Wrexham impressed in their 3-2 win over Leeds in Florida, and goals can very much be expected once again tonight.
