LIV Golf might ‘finally come to its senses’ and ‘euthanise itself’ after losing billions

Ex-PGA Tour star Brandel Chamblee believes LIV Golf could be about to abolish itself.

The golf league is rumoured to be set for a ‘bombshell’ announcement regarding its future this week.

It comes ahead of this weekend’s event in Mexico City, which is scheduled to get underway on Thursday.

Club de Golf Chapultepec will host the sixth tournament of the 2026 LIV Golf season.

However, the league’s future appears uncertain following reports which emerged on Tuesday night.

Popular X account Monday Q Info alleged that a ‘bombshell announcement’ on the future of the tour is imminent.

The news has caused much speculation from fans and pundits on social media since.

Golf Channel pundit Chamblee has now shared his own views on the potential announcement.

When asked for his thoughts by a fan, the 63-year-old wrote on X: “Given that the product was so ill-conceived and ended up being worse than anyone could have imagined.

“With shotgun starts, initially 54 holes, a team concept that was nothing but laughable and tournaments that meant and continue to mean nothing, and such a paltry number of viewers, losing billions along the way.

“Would it surprise anyone if the Saudis came to their corrupted senses and finally euthanised the whole lame-brained tour.”

LIV Golf was founded in 2021 before launching with its first season the following year.

The tour is financed by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund and was introduced as a direct competitor to the PGA Tour.

As well as having a team format, LIV events feature no cuts and began with just 54 holes per event.

From this season, though, tournaments have consisted of four rounds after expanding to 72 holes.

A number of high-profile PGA Tour stars have defected to join LIV since its unveiling five years ago.

They included major champions Bryson DeChambeau, Jon Rahm, Phil Mickelson and Cameron Smith.

However, recent months have seen a number of players leave the league to return to the PGA Tour.

Patrick Reed departed at the start of this year in hopes of regaining his PGA Tour playing privileges.

The 2018 Masters champion has since featured on the DP World Tour, where he has already won twice in 2026, ahead of becoming eligible for a PGA Tour comeback in August.

Meanwhile, Brooks Koepka re-joined in January, with his return coming at the Farmers Insurance Open.

It marked his first PGA Tour appearance for just under four years.
