Bryson DeChambeau actions after final round revealed following bid for ‘Donald Trump intervention’

Bryson DeChambeau allegedly tried to call on President Donald Trump during heated discussions at The Open.

The American golfer was hit with a two-shot penalty after Friday’s second round for for breaching Rule 8.1 by inadvertently improving the area of his intended swing by trampling some long grass.

DeChambeau was fuming at seeing a 66 turn into a 68 and falling three shots off the lead.

Veteran golf writer Geoff Shackelford claimed in The Quadrilateral that the LIV Golf star called for Trump — a massive golf fan — to get involved.

The Commander in Chief controversially called FIFA president Gianni Infantino before Folarin Balogun‘s World Cup suspension was overturned in a move world soccer’s governing body insists was made independently.

DeChambeau had no such luck, which is probably fortunate for fans of sporting integrity as it prevents an alarming new trend from developing.

Shackelford revealed that his request came during talks which lasted well over an hour and involved the golfer returning to the fifth hole at Royal Birkdale with R&A officials.

DeChambeau was captured in the tall fescue rough alongside Executive Director of Governance Grant Moir and DP World Tour referee Mark Litton.

Talks continued in the Recorders’ trailer with R&A Chief Executive Mark Darbon and Executive Director of Championships Johnnie Cole-Hamilton.

DeChambeau posted a 2-over-par 72 on Sunday to finish the championship at 4 under par, tied for 14th and six behind eventual winner Ryan Fox.

Following his final round, the brash American declined to speak with media for the third straight day, continuing an apparent feud with reporters that bubbled away in the background throughout the fourth and final major of the year.

With DeChambeau allegedly failing to sign his scorecard during the meeting, other players were delayed in recording their rounds and Saturday’s tee times weren’t published until almost midnight.

His request and appeal were denied, with the Guardian reporting that the 32-year-old asked to keep his signed scorecard.

At one stage, DeChambeau threatened to quit the tournament and his actions caused a split among the PGA Tour.

World No.1 Scottie Scheffler and Sam Burns defended their countryman, but Rory McIlroy didn’t hold back in his assessment.

“To hold the tournament hostage like that, and to have all of us, players, volunteers, everyone waiting on him to depart, I didn’t feel like it was a great look,” said the Northern Irishman.

McIlroy also accused DeChambeau of being “performative” and admitted he is “not particularly fond” of his colleague, which has long been apparent.

BBC Radio 5 Live’s Iain Carter asked R&A Chief Executive Mark Darbon whether he had spoken to Trump and he issued a quick denial.

Golf icon Nick Faldo insisted that the punishment was fair on Sky Sports.

“You cannot remove anything in your intended swing path,” he said. “It was totally inadvertent but it has nothing to do with that, it has nothing to do with Bryson, but he is a golfer that has put his foot down and moved the grass. It is in the rule book.

“The R&A handled it beautifully. Bottom line – job done. ‘Sorry mate, you’ve got a two-shot penalty’.” 

Faldo also criticized DeChambeau’s attitude, echoing McIlroy’s views.

“He lost the plot for a couple of minutes,” he added while watching the incident back. “The video is pretty factual.”

He also insisted “no player is bigger than the game” and noted: “Bryson wants to be the centre of attention and everything.”
