Liberty bringing Jonquel Jones back on multi-year contract
The New York Liberty are shaking things up in free agency on Saturday. With the organization seemingly having big goals for the 2026 season, the front office managed to retain star center Jonquel Jones by giving her a new contract.
Reports indicate that Jones, who is 32 years old, is set to sign a multi-year deal with the Liberty, according to Madeline Kenney of the New York Post. The financials of the contract are not yet known, but Jones will remain in New York for the long haul.
“The New York Liberty are finalizing a multiyear deal with Jonquel Jones, sources tell The Post,” reported Kenney.
Jones has played for the Liberty since 2023. She began her career in 2016 with the Connecticut Sun. Jonquel Jones quickly emerged as a star in the WNBA during her second season in the league. She owns career averages of 13.4 points, 8.4 rebounds, 2.0 assists, and 1.3 blocks per game, with a 51.4% field goal percentage and shooting 38.3% from three-point range.
Jonquel Jones is a six-time All-Star, while also winning the MVP (2021), Sixth-Woman of the Year (2018), and Most Improved Player (2017) awards throughout her nine-year career. She won her first WNBA Championship in 2024 with the Liberty.
New York is loading up for the 2026 season. Not only is the club bringing Jonquel Jones back, but the Liberty are also signing former Phoenix Mercury power forward Satou Sabally. Those two in the front court, Sabrina Ionescu and Marine Johannes, in the backcourt, and Breanna Stewart on the wing, sound like a remarkable starting five for any team in the WNBA.
