Latest update on Lionel Messi’s injury before FIFA World Cup

Just days before the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the USA, Canada, and Mexico, soccer legend Lionel Messi almost gave his fans across the world and the people of Argentina a close scare. During Inter Miami’s 6-4 victory game against Philadelphia Union, fans saw Messi request himself getting subbed off.

Worries emerged after the legendary soccer player walked off the pitch in the 73rd minute of the game with injury concerns. Due to the heavy rainfall during the match, Inter Miami’s coach, Guillermo Hoyos, stated that Messi may have been experiencing fatigue, and the team opted not to take any chances with the impending global tournament.

After a few hours, Inter Miami shared an official update on Messi’s injury scare. The club announced that Messi, 38, is currently suffering from muscle fatigue in his left hamstring.

“Inter Miami CF has provided an injury update presented by Baptist Health for Leo Messi. Inter Miami CF’s captain had to leave the field yesterday, Sunday, May 24, during the match against Philadelphia Union, due to physical discomfort,” the official club statement read.

“After undergoing further medical tests this Monday, the initial diagnosis indicates an overload associated with muscle fatigue in his left hamstring. The timeline for his return to physical activity will depend on his clinical and functional progress.”

Messi’s injury comes just a few days before Argentina begins its preparations for the World Cup at a training camp in Kansas ⁠City. As of now, there are no confirmations regarding his World Cup status, although he is expected to be part of the final World Cup squad and play his record-equalling sixth FIFA World Cup. Drawn in Group J, Argentina will have Algeria, Austria, and Jordan as its group opponents
