Knicks rumors: Front office pleading with James Dolan to save Mitchell Robinson situation
The New York Knicks have some tough decisions to make this offseason, and it all revolves around the second apron, two words most organizations don’t like to hear. As for James Dolan, he doesn’t want to get involved with it, which means the Knicks could lose some of the bench power that helped them win the NBA championship this season.
On the other hand, there are people in the organization who are pleading with Dolan to go over the apron to retain their free agents, one of whom includes Mitchell Robinson, according to Fred Katz of The Athletic.
“As the general spiel goes, the issue with crossing into such expensive territory, a marker that’s $21 million above the luxury tax, is not just the money; it’s the lost resources,” Katz wrote. “Go beyond that $222 million figure, and a franchise kisses away the ability to make most types of trades and execute most kinds of free-agent signings.
“The Knicks’ front office knows this. And yet, it also understands that dipping below the second apron would lead to much of its depth flocking elsewhere, which is why, despite Dolan’s desires, it wants to go over the second apron, according to league sources, who were granted anonymity to speak freely. But so far, Dolan has not changed his mind.”
The Knicks have shown that they’re title contenders with the roster they have, which should give some logic as to why some want to bring back their same core from this past season. If Robinson, Landry Shamet and Jose Alvarado all come back on cheaper deals, while cutting Pacôme Dadiet, then signing two veterans, the Knicks would just be approximately $8 million over the second apron threshold.
If Robinson and Shamet came back on bigger deals, and Alvarado opted into the final year of his contract, the Knicks would be $18 million above the second apron, which is what Dolan wants to avoid.
