Knicks’ 22-point comeback Game 1 win makes history not seen since 1970

The New York Knicks pulled out perhaps one of the greatest comebacks in playoff history. The Knicks found themselves down by 22 points around the midway point of the fourth quarter of Game 1. The Cleveland Cavaliers’ tough defense had silenced the usually raucous Madison Square Garden. Many fans were mentally preparing for Game 2 already.

However, Jalen Brunson refused to let the Knicks lose another Game 1 in the Eastern Conference Finals. The All-Star guard led his team to a crazy 18-1 run to keep the game close. New York would force overtime after another Brunson bucket, eventually winning 115-104 in OT. That 22-point comeback is the biggest playoff comeback in NBA history since 1970 and the largest Knicks comeback in franchise history.

It’s a welcome change of pace for the Knicks, who were the victim of a comeback in Game 1 of the ECF last season. Instead of being terrorized by Tyrese Haliburton and the Indiana Pacers, though, it was New York’s turn to inflict pain on their opponents. After struggling for most of the game, Brunson came alive in the fourth quarter, scoring bucket after bucket to put the pressure on the Cavs. The Knicks’ defense also held strong, forcing stops against James Harden and the Cleveland offense.

In overtime, the Knicks refused to let up the aggression. Timely makes from Brunson, Landry Shamet, and OG Anunoby extended the lead as the Cavs continued to flounder on offense. In the end, New York pulled out the improbable win to defend their home court against Cleveland.

Game 2 of the series will be played on Thursday at the Garden against. The Knicks are looking to avoid another cold start as they did in Game 1 and hopefully cruise to an easier win.
