Kennedy Burke joining Sun on 1-year contract in WNBA free agency
The Connecticut Sun made a big splash in WNBA free agency having reached an agreement with future Hall of Famer Brittney Griner. The team also opted to bring back center Olivia Nelson-Ododa. Fitting in with the theme of fortifying their frontcourt rotation this offseason, the Sun came to an agreement with Kennedy Burke on a free agency deal, as per Alexa Philippou of ESPN.
Kennedy Burke’s new contract in free agency with the Sun is expected to be a one-year deal. That would mean Burke, as of now, would not accompany the team during their move to Houston for the 2027 season. This is the final season the Sun will be playing in Connecticut after a sale to Houston Rockets owner Tilman Fertitta.
The No. 22 overall pick in the 2019 WNBA Draft, Burke began her career with the Indiana Fever. She played two seasons for the Fever before joining the Seattle Storm in 2021. In 2022 she played for the Washington Mystics, then did not appear in the league, opting to play overseas for the 2023 season.
Burke has spent the past two years with the New York Liberty, playing a key role off the bench during the team’s 2024 championship run. She’s coming off the best statistical season of her six-year career now.
She appeared in 36 games, including nine starts, at a little over 21 minutes per game. She averaged a career-high 8.1 points, 2.4 rebounds and 1.3 assists with splits of 46.8 percent shooting from the field, 41.4 percent shooting from the 3-point line and 75.9 percent shooting from the free-throw line.
The Sun are coming off a season in which they missed the playoffs for the first time in eight years. It was also the team’s first year under new head coach Rachid Meziane.
