Jose Mourinho returns to manage Real Madrid
“The Special One” is back. Thirteen years and six clubs later, Jose Mourinho is once again taking the reins as the Real Madrid manager.
“BREAKING: José Mourinho back to Real Madrid, HERE WE GO!,” international football insider Fabrizio Romano reported Monday. “All terms have been verbally agreed between José Mourinho and Real Madrid, waiting to sign all documents. Plan for initial two year deal, JM to travel to Madrid after Real-Bilbao game.”
Mourinho is widely considered one of the best soccer managers in the world. He is also one of the most eccentric, demanding, and controversial figures in international football. He has a 767-252-223 record as the man in charge and has won 21 major trophies, including the Champions League twice, with Porto in 2004 and Inter Milan in 2010.
During his first stint with Real Madrid, from 2010-13, the Portuguese-born Mourinho won one La Liga title, one Copa del Rey, and one Supercopa de España.
As good as Mourinho is, and as much as he wins nearly everywhere he goes, his personality and managerial style often burn out quickly with either the club, the players, or both. He’s never spent more than three consecutive seasons with one club, though Chelsea and now Real Madrid have brought him back for a second run.
The most recent Benfica manager takes over a Real Madrid squad that is a bit of a mess right now. They last won LaLiga in 2024 and just gave away the league title to hated rivals Barcelona for the second season in a row. After parting ways with Xabi Alonso in January, the locker room has descended into chaos, with Aurelien Tchouameni sending Frederico Valverde to the hospital after a fight.
Still, if anyone can come in and clean up Real Madrid, it’s Mourinho.
