John Heitinga seals Premier League return just two months after ill-fated Ajax reign
Tottenham Hotspur have confirmed John Heitinga has joined Thomas Frank’s staff as a first team assistant coach.
Heitinga’s new role in north London marks his return to the Premier League coaching ranks after he was sacked by Ajax just five months into his reign having been appointed last May.

Prior to that he was an assistant coach for Arne Slot during Liverpool’s 2024/25 title-winning campaign.
In a club statement, Frank expressed delight at getting Heitinga on board and expects the former Netherlands international to bring plenty of defensive know-how to the training pitch.
“John is a great addition to our coaching staff,” Frank said.
“His ability, personality and character will add huge value both on and off the pitch.
“He had an impressive playing career across Europe – including five years in the Premier League – and with the Dutch national team.
“As a former defender, that will be one of his main responsibilities on the training pitch, and he brings great coaching and management experiences from all levels of the game, which will really help us moving forward.”
Heitinga will hope his time serving under Frank can rebuild his reputation following the disastrous stint in Amsterdam.
The Dutchman was in charge of Ajax for just 15 games before the axe swung, with a 3-0 loss at home to Galatasaray in the Champions League proving to be the final nail in the coffin.
