The NFL is a quarterback’s league now more than ever. That means that the passing game is king, and while establishing the run is as crucial as it’s always been, we’ve seen how the new rules and offenses favor the air attack.

That’s why the wide receivers need to be more complete nowadays to stand out from the rest of the pack. That also means being in top shape.

With that in mind, legendary wide receiver Jerry Rice had some things to say about the current state of the game. As quoted by NFL on ESPN, the legendary pass catcher shared some words of wisdom with the younger generation:

“If I played in today’s era, I would really need to bulk up more, be more muscular, because catching those passes underneath, and being able to break tackles, and also take the punishment of those defensive players. Guys coming into the league, they better realize I gotta be able to catch these short passes, get those YAC yards, and contribute to the team,” Rice said.

Every time Jerry Rice talks, everybody else listens. He’s considered to be either the greatest or one of the greatest pass catchers the game has ever seen, so he certainly knows what he’s talking about.

We’re watching younger players set new marks almost every week. Young men like Puka Nacua, Jaxon Smith-Njigba, and Emeka Egbuka have shown the potential to be among the league’s leaders in receptions and receiving yards week in and week out. And with an already big pool of talent with guys like Ja’Marr Chase, Malik Nabers, and Justin Jefferson, there’s no shortage of talent to choose from when it comes to the best wide receivers in the game.

It’s not easy to stand out from the rest of the pack in this league. So, if you’re looking to do so, you’d better hit the gym.
