Jeff Hafley’s warning to any Dolphins player who throws a punch at Commanders joint practice
The Miami Dolphins are entering the first year of a rebuild during the 2026 season. Miami will retool the team around Jeff Hafley, who signed as head coach earlier this offseason. The former defensive coordinator is going to great lengths to define the exact culture he wants to build in Miami in the years to come.
Hafley issued a clear warning to his players ahead of joint training camp practices with the Commanders, which kick off on Wednesday.
Miami’s head coach made it clear that the team will not tolerate players getting into fights with Washington during practice. In fact, any player who throws a punch during joint practices will be thrown out of practice, per Dolphins reporter Marcel Louis-Jacques.
This is the same rule that Hafley has implemented for the Dolphins throughout the early parts of training camp.
“We don’t have time for that,” Hafley said. Hafley added that he expects his team to play physical during Wednesday’s practice, noting “I’ll be disappointed if we’re not.”
Hafley’s warning comes after a rash of training camp fights have popped up around the NFL during the past week.
Fights have been commonplace at Bills training camp. There have also been scuffles at Panthers training camp and at the joint practices between the Jets and Buccaneers.
It makes a lot of sense for Hafley to install some guardrails for his team before joint practices. Expectations will not be high in Miami this fall, at least when it comes to winning games. As such, establishing a firm culture and pinpointing building blocks for the future are much more realistic milestones.
Still, Hafley wants to see his team play hard and display plenty of physicality on the field. That can be a tough balance to manage for NFL players, especially in joint practices.
It will be fascinating to see if the Dolphins can keep remain levelheaded during joint practices with the Commanders.
