Jack Draper reveals one thing he refuses to do for Andy Murray as coaching link-up ahead of Wimbledon begins

Jack Draper joked he would not be calling Sir Andy Murray by his proper title anytime soon.

Murray, a two-time Wimbledon winner, has started coaching Draper for the grass court season.

The 24-year-old made a winning return to competitive action at Eastbourne by beating American Marcos Giron 6-4, 7-6 (7-5).

It was his first time back in court in two months in an injury ravaged spell for the young Brit.

He has plummeted down to 160 in the world rankings as a result.

Draper could not help but aim a few digs at his former Davis Cup teammate, and now temporary coach, Murray.

Asked what it was like having a knight in his coaching box, Draper joked: “I haven’t called him ‘Sir’ yet – that’s not going to happen.

“I’m really grateful to Andy that he’s chosen to help me and wants to help me.

“Today was a performance a bit like what he used to do – winning ugly.”

Draper has played just 12 matches in the last year due to problems that started at Wimbledon in 2025.

A strong run of results, including reaching the US Open semi-final in 2024, saw him climb to a high of world no.4 in June last year.

“Andy, truthfully, is one of my biggest inspirations. When I was younger I remember him playing all the big events and being there to watch him,” Draper continued.

“He believes in my game, he believes in me as a person. That’s what I really need right now coming back from the year I have had.”

Draper will meet fellow Brit Jack Pinnington-Jones in the second round of Eastbourne.

Will Murray carry on coaching Draper?

As it stands, the three-time Grand Slam winner is in Draper’s coaching box for the grass court season.

This could be extended, however, it would have to fit into Murray’s home life.

The three-time Grand Slam winner said: “I get to spend a decent amount of time with Jack. I also believe a lot in his tennis. In the sessions I’ve done with him, I’ve been more impressed probably than what I expected and I thought he was good before I started helping him.

“He’s a quick learner. He’s got very few holes in his game. He’s a more complete player than probably what I expected as well.

“I really like Jack, and I wanted to help him when he asked if I could. But I was quite clear about what I could and couldn’t do.

“I still want to be able to pick my kids up from school, drop them off at home – he’s asked for me to help him over this next period. I’ve enjoyed being on court with him. We’ll see how the next few weeks pan out.”

Murray had a six-month spell coaching Novak Djokovic that ended in May 2025.

When is Wimbledon?

Wimbledon runs from June 29 to July 12 at the All England Club in south west London.

Serena Williams a seven-time champion at SW19, will make a return after being handed a singles and doubles wildcard.
