Iran vs New Zealand predictions and betting tips – Backing Iran to grind out a winning start through Taremi
Iran get their World Cup campaign underway against New Zealand at the SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, with the game kicking off at 2am UK time on Tuesday morning, live on BBC One.
With Belgium the clear favourites in Group G, this opener is the one both sides will have circled as their best chance of points, which makes it enormously important.
Iran are favourites at 10/11 and rightly so. They topped a tough Asian qualifying group, they’re organised and experienced at this level, and in Mehdi Taremi they have a genuine star striker.
New Zealand are physical and dangerous from set pieces through Chris Wood, but they’re a clear step below in quality and arrive in poor form, so I’m backing Team Melli to control this one.

Iran vs New Zealand predictions
Iran qualified in convincing fashion, navigating the grueling Asian section with just a single defeat, with Taremi their standout man on ten goals across the campaign. They’ve not had the smoothest build-up though.
Forward Sardar Azmoun was left out of the squad for disciplinary reasons and with the Iranian domestic league suspended since March, several home-based players arrive short of match sharpness.
There’s also the off-field strain of a diplomatic dispute with the United States, which means Iran are basing themselves in Mexico and flying in and out for each group game.
New Zealand, by contrast, look there for the taking. They’ve lost nine of their last twelve friendlies and failed to score in four of their last five matches.
Everything runs through captain Chris Wood, but the Nottingham Forest man is coming off a six-month knee injury that limited him to three Premier League goals in fifteen games after his return in April.
New Zealand will be well-drilled and physical, and they carry a threat from set pieces but breaking down an experienced Iran side looks beyond this group of players.
Iran vs New Zealand betting tips
Here are my three bets for the game.
Iran to edge a cagey opener in LA
This has the look of a tight, low-event game, and in those matches the side with the better individual quality usually finds a way.
Iran have it in Taremi, they’re more experienced at this level, and they’ll have something close to home advantage with one of the world’s largest Iranian communities in the US packing out the stands in Inglewood.
New Zealand have not won a single World Cup match in their history and arrive having failed to score in four of their last five. Iran will be patient, they’ll frustrate, and they have the class to nick the goal. At 10/11 the win is my best bet.
Bet on Iran to win at 10/11 with bet365
Taremi to settle it for Team Melli
When you’ve got the one genuine matchwinner on the pitch, you back him. Mehdi Taremi has 60 goals in 105 caps for Iran, he scored ten times in qualifying with seven assists alongside, and with Azmoun out, the entire attack is built to feed him.
He’s up against a New Zealand back line that is organised but a level below what he faces week in week out, and his clever movement in and around the box is exactly the kind of threat that unlocks a deep defence. At 9/4 for the man most likely to score in this game, that’s a great price.
Bet on Mehdi Taremi to score anytime at 9/4 with Sky Bet
Iran to shut the door at the back
This is the bet that ties all the stats together. New Zealand have failed to find the net in four of their last five outings, and with Wood short of sharpness after his injury lay-off, the goal threat from elsewhere in their squad is thin, with only Kosta Barbarouses having reached double figures internationally.
Iran were so organised throughout qualifying and veteran keeper Alireza Beiranvand brings more than 80 caps of experience behind a back line that knows how to defend a lead. If this plays out as the controlled, low-scoring game I expect, a clean sheet at 11/10 looks the way to play it.
Bet on Iran to keep a clean sheet at 11/10 with bet365

Important historical facts about Iran and New Zealand for betting
- These sides have met just twice, a goalless friendly in 1973 and a 3-0 Iran win in 2003, so Iran have never lost to New Zealand.
- Iran have never progressed beyond the group stage in six previous World Cup appearances.
- New Zealand have never won a match at a World Cup finals.
- Iran lost just once across their entire Asian qualifying campaign.
- New Zealand have lost nine of their last twelve friendlies and failed to score in four of their last five matches.
- Mehdi Taremi scored ten goals with seven assists in qualifying and has 60 international goals in total.
A controlled, professional night’s work is what I’m expecting from Iran. Don’t expect fireworks, but do expect Team Melli to get the job done.
