‘Iceman’ Caleb Williams is ‘cheap’ Bears QB who can replace Patrick Mahomes as face of NFL
Caleb Williams is already one of the most unique quarterbacks in the NFL.
From his painted fingernails and new ‘Iceman’ nickname to his clutch touchdown throws in playoff games and Super Bowl potential, the former No. 1 overall draft pick has become the new face of the Chicago Bears.

Heisman winner can be NFL MVP in 2026
“I go out every single day, blood, sweat and tears,” Williams posted. “I give my all on every single play, every chance that I get. I’ve been an advocate for mental health, show your emotions and express yourself.”
While the NFL Draft zeroes in on top QB prospects Fernando Mendoza and Ty Simpson, the 6ft 1in and 226 pound Williams is entering a pivotal third season with the Bears.
He’s also trying to borrow an ‘Iceman’ nickname used by everyone from NBA legend George Gervin to Hollywood hero Arnold Schwarzenegger in a Batman movie.
There have been times when Williams has appeared overwhelmed by all the pressure and Washington Commanders QB Jayden Daniels (No. 2 pick in 2024) looked like the better young field general.
But Williams’ fourth-and-8 ‘silhouette pass’ fired to Rome Odunze in a thrilling 31-27 playoff win over the Green Bay Packers last season was proof of the young QB’s clutch talent.
“Belief. That’s all you need,” Williams said after the 18-point comeback victory. “You got belief in the coaches that they’re going to call the right play at the right time. You got belief in the players on the field that you’re going to make the right play at the right time.”
He’s playing on an affordable four-year, $39.8 million contract, has dual-threat capabilities and will be a preseason MVP contender in 2026.
Below talkSPORT takes an in-depth look at Williams’ football background, family, net worth, off-the-field life and NFL future in Chicago.
Super Bowl window is open for Bears
The Bears are coming off a strong 11-6 season that featured an NFC North division title.
Following the lead of rookie head coach Ben Johnson — who was poached from the rival Detroit Lions — Williams improved on his overall efficiency in 2025 and won his first playoff game.

“For me, personally, he’s been monumental in my life so far,” said Williams, referring to Johnson.
Chicago’s season ended with a 20-17 overtime loss to the Los Angeles Rams, while Williams completed 23-of-42 passes for 257 yards and two touchdowns.
He also threw three interceptions in that season-ending defeat and posted a below-average 59.3 passer rating.
Williams must continue to improve his passing efficiency in the pocket during his second year working with Johnson.
Chicago should again compete for the NFC North crown in 2026 and an MVP-caliber year from Williams will turn the Bears into Super Bowl contenders while he’s only 24-years-old.
Is Caleb Williams accurate?
Johnson clearly made an impact on Williams last year, but the QB’s completion percentage fell to 58.1 percent.
Caleb Williams in the spotlight
Age: 24
Born: November 18, 2001 in Washington D.C.
NFL seasons: 3
College: Oklahoma, USC
Draft: No. 1 overall in 2024
High school: Gonzaga College HS
2025 stats: 3,942 passing yards, 388 rushing yards, 30 total TDs, 58.1 completion %, 90.1 passer rating
Did you know? Williams is a Piscataway Conoy Tribal Member and his background was celebrated when he won the 2022 Heisman Trophy.
The good news is that Chicago ranked sixth in the NFL in average offensive yards (369.2) and ninth in scoring (25.9).
Williams finished fourth in the league in completions of more than 20 yards (58), trailing only MVP Matthew Stafford, Drake Maye and Jared Goff.
The Washington D.C. native also had a better interception rate (1.2 percent) than Buffalo Bills star QB Josh Allen.
Iceman has come long way from Oklahoma
Williams was raised by his parents, Carl Williams and Dayna Price.
Carl remains close with his son and serves as an advisor.
Price was a nail technician and is a regular source of inspiration for the Bears QB.
Williams was the highest-rated prospect of his draft class and spent the 2021 season putting up big numbers for the Oklahoma Sooners.
But it was a transfer to USC and reunion with head coach Lincoln Riley that ignited Williams’ pro career.
“Since I was 10, all I ever wanted to do was to play football,” Williams wrote when he entered the draft process. “From the 5:30am breakfast club workouts to the long nights watching film, through every win and every hard loss, my love and passion for the game never wavered.”
But he was also polarizing for the Trojans, painting “F*** Utah” and “F*** NDXX” on his fingernails during games, and crying with his mom in the stands after a USC loss.
“You have a young man who realizes his college football career is over and he’s weeping on the sideline,” ESPN NFL Draft analyst Matt Miller exclusively told talkSPORT. “I would take that 10 times out of 10 over a guy who’ss bumping into his coach on the sideline or slamming his helmet down.
“We’ve seen bad body language from quarterbacks at times, and we’ve seen how that does affect a team. With Caleb, you don’t have to worry about any of that.”

Flashy Williams is staring at huge payday
Williams made $10 million in NIL money during his two seasons at USC, where won the Heisman Trophy and became a locked-in No. 1 pick.
Some NFL teams were advised to hold off drafting a QB in 2023 before Williams became available to all pro teams.
He’s been linked with Athletic Brewing, Hawkins Way Capital and Beats by Dre, and has also been associated with AT&T, Dr. Pepper, Nike, Panini America, PlayStation and United Airlines.
Williams’ net worth is estimated in the $10m to $14m range.
His four-year, $39m contract with the Bears is fully guaranteed and is on a team-friendly rookie scale.
With a $25m signing bonus and fifth-year option for the 2028 season, Williams is set to make $10.7m in 2026 and $12.5m in 2027.
He’s expected sign a new long-term deal with the Bears that could be worth than $60m a year.
Patrick Mahomes holds an NFL record $450m contract with the Kansas City Chiefs, while the Dallas Cowboys‘ Dak Prescott tops all NFL QBs in average annual value ($60m).

Protecting the Bears’ biggest investment
Braxton Jones, Joe Thuney, Garrett Bradbury, Jonah Jackson and Darnell Wright top the Bears’ offensive line depth chart entering OTAs.
While it’s critical for Williams to keep building his relationship with Johnson and improving his late-game efficiency, it’s also important for the Bears to keep protecting their franchise QB from training camp through the playoffs.
Williams was sacked a league-high 68 times as a rookie but that number fell to 24 during Johnson’s first year as head coach.
Chicago features Odunze as a top receiver and the team could address the position in the upcoming 2026 NFL Draft.
Williams has Super Bowl potential entering his third pro season.
The Iceman has already won an NFC North title and a playoff victory.
But devoted Chicago fans want more … an MVP, the team’s first Super Bowl trophy since 1985 and the beginning of a Bears dynasty.
