Hip Hop producer 9th Wonder joins daughter as HBCU graduate
Legendary hip-hop producer 9th Wonder is set to fortify his HBCU family legacy. The producer, whose real name is Patrick Denard Douthit, will be graduating from North Carolina Central on Saturday. He announced the achievement on his Instagram account.
“9 years later.
What a ride. What a journey.
My career path has been the most bizarre and blessed ride ever. I’ve made music. I’ve taught at universities. I’ve been around the NBA’s future. I never saw any of it coming.
However this was, since I was a kid, the first thing on my list.
To graduate college.
This Saturday, after 26 years of dropping out of school to pursue a dream, I finally get to walk across that stage, at the school where I met friends, family, and even taught students.
North Carolina Central University.
It’s been a long time since I first stepped in Chidley Hall, 1st floor Annex, rm 106. 33 years ago to be exact. As the saying goes….its never too late.
@9thmadukes , I made it. For real, this time.
Congratulations to my students at @dukeuniversity and @wfuniversity, and all the students at @nccueagle , UPENN, @ecsuvikings , @harvard and the @rocnation_school . Your old professor will be joining you as a graduate this commencement season.
God is Good.
Much Love,
Patrick Denard Douthit
Bachelor of Arts, Interdisciplinary Studies
North Carolina Central University
Class of 2026
9th Wonder isn’t a stranger to HBCU life or even North Carolina Central. In 2007, 9th Wonder—along with Christopher “Play” Martin from the group Kid ‘n Play—was appointed by the then-Chancellor of North Carolina Central to be an artist-in-residence. This opened him up to teaching college courses about music, such as a course with Dr. Mark Anthony Neal called “Sampling Soul” at Duke University in 2010.
His daughter, Jada Douthit, currently attends Winston-Salem State University and recently joined the Phi Epsilon chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated. While at Winston-Salem State, Jada was a student-athlete on the women’s basketball team. Off the court, she followed in her father’s footsteps by becoming a music producer and creating a hip-hop club; she co-created The Watcher’s Soundwave.
