The Scottish Premiership title race was once again blown wide open over the weekend as the gap between the top two teams shrunk to just one point.
Hearts had the chance to pull six points clear with just two games to play ahead of their visit to Motherwell, with title rivals Celtic playing Old Firm rivals Rangers while the gap between the top two was sat at three points.
Derek McInnes’ side were held to a 1-1 draw by the Well on Saturday night though, and the following day saw Celtic come from behind to beat Rangers 3-1 to set up what looks like being a title showdown between the top two on the final day of the season at Celtic Park.
However, the Edinburgh side have the chance to win the title, their first since 1960, on Wednesday night as they face Falkirk, while Celtic travel to Motherwell.
Hearts head into Wednesday’s crunch clash, their final home game of the season, unbeaten in their last six and with three wins in their last four, including a crucial win over Rangers in their last home outing, which still leaves the title very much in their own hands.
The side from the capital are undefeated at home in the league all season, winning nine of their last 10 in the league, including each of their last six. However their only home defeat in any competition this season did come at the hands of Wednesday’s opponents in a penalty shootout in the Scottish Cup.
Falkirk are another team who exceeded expectations this season having secured the club’s first top six finish in the top flight since 1995, doing so in their first season back in the Premiership following back to back promotions.
John McGlynn’s side have, though, lost four of their last five matches in all competitions and have nothing tangible left to play for with European qualification no longer a possibility.
The Bairns are five points behind Hibs, though with two of the top three to play in their final couple of matches of the campaign, a sixth placed finish seems most likely.
Falkirk are yet to score in the league against Hearts this season across their three previous meetings, though as alluded to earlier, did get the better of the Jam Tarts when they visited Tynecastle Park in the Scottish Cup back in January.
Hearts could become the first non-Old Firm team since Sir Alex Ferguson’s Aberdeen in 1985 to be crowned Scottish champions on Wednesday night. Bet £20 on the action and get £40 in free bets with SBK.
