Grambling State University is getting national recognition once again. President Dr. Martin Lemelle Jr. recently took the spotlight on Bloomberg Businessweek, bringing the voice of HBCUs to one of the nation’s most influential business platforms. During the appearance, Lemelle discussed the transformative power of higher education, the value of investing in HBCUs, and how Grambling State continues to prepare students to lead in business, technology, public service, and beyond.

The national feature serves as another milestone for the university as it continues to elevate its profile under Lemelle’s leadership. With enrollment growth, innovative partnerships, and a renewed focus on student outcomes, Grambling State is proving that HBCUs remain at the forefront of developing the next generation of talent. Lemelle’s appearance on Bloomberg Businessweek not only spotlighted the university’s progress but also showcased the broader impact HBCUs continue to have on the American workforce and economy.

Lemelle’s appearance comes at a time of tremendous momentum for the institution. Grambling State recently celebrated one of the most successful fundraising efforts in its history as the university’s fifth annual 1901 Day of Giving generated more than $1.25 million from 859 donors across the country, surpassing its $750,000 fundraising goal. The campaign raised a total of $1,251,715, making it the most successful giving day since the initiative’s inception.

The Louisiana HBCU is also celebrating several historic milestones, including 125 years of Grambling State University, 100 years of Tiger Athletics, and 100 years of the World-Famed Tiger Marching Band. Together, those anniversaries represent a legacy of excellence that continues to shape the institution’s future.

During the interview, Lemelle outlined a business-minded approach to higher education, emphasizing that institutions can adopt successful business strategies while remaining committed to their educational mission. He noted that balancing affordability, academic quality, and financial sustainability is critical to serving students effectively while ensuring long-term institutional success. He also stressed the importance of evaluating academic programs through both educational and financial lenses.

Like many HBCUs, Grambling State remains committed to expanding opportunities for its students. Lemelle highlighted the university’s focus on helping students achieve social and economic mobility through education.

“I’m happy to lead an institution that has one of the healthiest balance sheets in the country,” Lemelle said.

“When we think about Grambling State University going forward, and our mission as a HBCU, we want to deliver on our value proposition, which starts with a first-class education and is grounded in a perspective that allows students to achieve ultimate social and economic mobility.”

Later in the interview, Lemelle discussed how Grambling State is preparing students for the future workforce as technology and industries continue to evolve. He emphasized critical thinking, communication skills, leadership development, and innovation as essential tools for long-term success, noting that those qualities will help graduates remain competitive in an increasingly dynamic job market.
