Harry Kane tipped to play new sport after World Cup and seize $28m opportunity, ‘He has the talent’

The NFL’s best-paid kicker thinks Harry Kane could transition to the other kind of football if he wanted.

England icon Kane has long claimed he wishes to try his hand as an NFL kicker when he decides to hang up his boots.

Brandon Aubrey signed a record $28 million contract with the Dallas Cowboys, making him the highest-paid kicker in NFL history — the kind of lucrative opportunity that could one day entice Kane.

Having begun his sporting life as a footballer, he thinks the Three Lions’ top scorer is capable of transitioning to American football, but politely asked him to stick to netting goals for now.

Asked by talkSPORT’s Alex Crook what advice he would have for Kane, the former centre-back for the University of Notre Dame praised the Bayern Munich hotshot.

“Continue to score goals,” Aubrey said. “He’s got a chance to be one of the all-time elite soccer soccer players or football players, I guess.

“He’s a fantastic striker of the ball, so that’ll age gracefully as a kicker, and he he has the talent if he wanted to do that.

“It’s not quite as exciting as being a England’s top goal scorer, so please keep going uh as long as you can.

“But yeah, all jokes aside, he can definitely do it whenever he wanted to. But hopefully he’s not too old.

“I have a feeling he’ll be a little bit on the older side when he’s done with soccer and NFL teams don’t like to see uh too old of kickers to start.”

Kane turns 33 in July and is in talks over extending his Bayern contract, which runs out in 2027.

The England captain will be hoping to lead the Three Lions to World Cup glory in North America this summer, with England‘s first Group L game against Croatia on June 17.

Aubrey knows all about the journey having taken his wife’s advice and taken up kicking following his release from USL club Bethlehem Steel FC in 2018.

“Obviously I was drafted in 2017, played one year in the MLS, never made my official debut, played with the the two side, then played a season in the USL,” he said. “Played fairly well, but at the end of that season I was ready to be done, so I hung up the boots and started as a software engineer.

“Did that for three years. The whole time I was doing that, I was training to be a kicker. So it felt like for a while, you know, I had the ability if given the opportunity, but for a while it felt like that opportunity was never going to come.

“Luckily, the US likes to experiment a lot in sports and we had a experimental league, the USL pop up. Kind of a second tier, USFL, second tier football and I got a shot there.”

Aubrey is keeping tabs on the USMNT and thinks his country should be aiming for the quarter-finals.

“We should have nine points in this group, I think,” he said. “Lofty goals, but to not get out of the group at all would be devastating.

“I think a quarter-final appearance is pretty reasonable and from there anything could happen.”

On head coach Mauricio Pochettino‘s future amid links to AC Milan, Aubrey insisted that the players are more important.

“I personally don’t get so invested in managers,” he noted. “I more get invested in players and I think we’ve got a fantastic squad.

“So either way, I think the squad will stick around and find a way to be competitive.”
