French superstar Salahdine Parnasse joins UFC and gets instant main event in Paris

Highly-rated French lightweight Salahdine Parnasse has signed with the UFC.

Given his credentials in the sport already, Parnasse, known as ‘the Kylian Mbappe of French MMA,’  has been thrust straight into the spotlight for his UFC debut.

Who and when is Parnasse fighting?

The 28-year-old will face No. 12-ranked lightweight Dan Hooker in the main event of UFC Paris on September 5 for his first run-out in Dana White‘s promotion.

“I am taking the biggest step of my career,” Parnasse wrote on social media following the announcement.

“I don’t forget where I come from, I don’t forget the path I’ve travelled.

“None of this happened by chance: it’s the result of work, sacrifices, and above all, your support.”

Last time out, Parnasse made light work of MMA veteran Kenny Cross on the undercard of Netflix’s Ronda Rousey vs Gina Carano show, which was promoted by Jake Paul‘s Most Valuable Promotions (MVP).

After stopping Cross in the first round in his first appearance on US soil, Parnasse’s manager Stephane ‘Atch’ Chaufourier took to social media to suggest his team were waiting for the UFC call.

Parnasse has been monitored by White’s promotion for years, but lucrative offers from Polish MMA promotion KSW kept the Frenchman on their roster.

Before signing a one-fight deal with MVP, Parnasse had fought under the KSW banner for nine years, becoming the promotion’s youngest double champion in 2022 aged 24.

At one point, he was also considered the highest-paid fighter in the KSW roster, earning a reported $600,000 per fight.

Parnasse told talkSPORT.com before he defeated Cross that he wanted to replicate his European success on the global stage.

His eye-catching victory over Cross was clearly enough for the UFC brass to sign Parnasse, who joins a small group of fighters to make their debut in a main event spot.

The makings of Parnasse

Parnasse boasts a 23-2 professional record and has dominated the European MMA scene for more than 10 years now.

Growing up in Aubervilliers, France, Parnasse started training MMA at the age of 11, quickly realising his dream was to become a fighter.

“I was walking around my neighbourhood and saw an MMA sign, so I went to get registered and started training,” Parnasse told talkSPORT.com in April.

“I was getting wins from a very young age and worked hard to make my way [in the sport].

“I wanted to get out of the normal upbringing from the town I grew up in.

“Of course, family is a big deal for me. I want to grow and help my family, but also be somebody very successful in life and in the sport I’ve chosen for my profession.”

Parnasse found his trade representing the Atch Academy in Aubervilliers, which is named after his mentor and manager ‘Atch.’

He made his professional debut aged just 17 in June 2015 under the banner of French promotion 100% Fight.

‘I’m very flattered by Mbappe tag’

It took just three years for Parnasse to build up a 10-0 record in the sport before he was already being described by French sports newspaper L’Equipe as ‘the Kylian Mbappe of French MMA.’

At the time, Mbappe had signed for Paris Saint-Germain for a fee of almost $200million and scored in the 2018 World Cup final only weeks later.

“I’m very flattered by the Kylian Mbappe tag,” Parnasse explained to talkSPORT.com.

“Because Mbappe performs in his sport. I’m Salahdine Parnasse, who performs in his sport.

“But, of course, I want people to know my name, know who Salahdine Parnasse is.

“I want to leave a mark on people’s minds by winning fights and by being a good fighter.

“So when they talk about me, they’re talking about the MMA fighter doing amazing things, just as Kylian Mbappe does in football.”

Parnasse will no doubt be on people’s minds if he goes out and defeats Hooker at Paris’ Accor Arena in what is expected to be a classic, raucous atmosphere.

He will surge straight into the UFC lightweight rankings with a victory and be just one or two wins away from a shot at the title currently held by Justin Gaethje.
