Framber Valdez reveals reason behind decision to join Tigers over Astros
Starting pitcher Framber Valdez signed a three-year, $115 million contract with the Detroit Tigers in the offseason after playing for the Houston Astros for eight years. While he is now with a new club, it appears Valdez initially wanted to remain in Houston.
The 32-year-old left-hander admitted on Monday that he would have preferred to re-sign with the Astros, according to Chandler Rome of The Athletic. However, Houston’s front office never attempted to negotiate a new deal with him, and he was forced to sign elsewhere for the first time in his career.
“Through an interpreter, Framber Valdez said the Astros never reached out or negotiated with him this offseason,” reported Rome. “Valdez said, ‘I would have loved for my team of eight, nine years to want me back, but it’s part of the business. I understand that. No hard feelings at all,’ Valdez said.”
Overall, the two-time All-Star is grateful for his time in Houston, per Rome. He also claimed he is thankful for his opportunity playing for the Astros, as his time led to his new contract with the Tigers.
“I am very grateful and thankful for them giving me the chance to become the player I am,” said Valdez about the Astros. “They gave me the opportunity to be a major-league player and an opportunity to have a good contract now as a professional. I’m thankful for them.”
Framber Valdez’s first year in Detroit hasn’t quite gone as successfully as he likely hoped. While the Tigers are ranked near the bottom of the AL Central, Valdez owns a 4.40 ERA and 1.339 WHIP with 61 strikeouts through 77.2 innings pitched.
