Former Phillies’ Trevor Plouffe relives hilarious walk-off homer vs. Kike Hernandez at Citizens Bank Park

Former Phillies infielder Trevor Plouffe took a trip down memory lane during All-Star festivities at Citizens Bank Park, reflecting on the memorable walk-off home run he hit off Dodgers utility player Kiké Hernández in one of the longest games in franchise history.

While sitting near the seats where the home run landed while co-hosting his podcast “Talkin’ Baseball”, Plouffe joked about the moment that ended the marathon contest.

Plouffe recalled facing Hernández, who entered to pitch in the bottom of the 16th inning after the Dodgers had exhausted their bullpen.

“Look, against position players, it’s easy yet tough mentally because he got me down to two strikes and think about striking out in a situation like that,” Plouffe said, “(The) 16th inning wasn’t an option. I got a pitch up out over the plate and somehow … I’m pretty impressed with myself to be honest.”

The home run came on July 24, 2018, and lifted the Phillies to a 7-4 win after 16 innings in a game that lasted 5 hours, 55 minutes. Hernández became the first position player in the expansion era to allow a walk-off home run while pitching, according to ESPN.

After using eight pitchers, Los Angeles turned to Hernández to finish the game. He retired the first batter before issuing consecutive walks to Jesmuel Valentin and Jorge Alfaro. Plouffe then drove an opposite-field, three-run homer to right field for his first home run of the 2018 season and the second walk-off homer of his career.

The podcast episode comes as Citizens Bank Park hosts this year’s MLB All-Star festivities, including Monday night’s Home Run Derby.
