Florian Wirtz denied first Liverpool goal as Premier League clarification released
Florian Wirtz was cruelly denied his first Liverpool goal in the Reds’ 1-1 draw at home to Sunderland.
The £116million summer signing thought he had picked the perfect moment to net his first goal for the club with Regis Le Bris’ side closing in on a famous victory.

The Germany international produced some nice footwork before finding the net by way of a deflection of Sunderland defender Nordi Mukiele.
At first glance it appeared that Wirtz had finally broken his long duck in a Liverpool shirt, but replays quickly took the shine of the Reds’ leveller.
Wirtz’s shot was sailing off target until the deflection off Mukiele took the ball goalwards and past Sunderland goalkeeper Robin Roefs.
The Premier League match centre quickly clarified: “The goal accreditation panel has adjudged Liverpool’s 81st minute goal as a Mukiele own goal.”
Nevertheless, it goes down as his first goal contribution for the Reds in the Premier League with Wirtz handed the assist.

Sunderland were pegged back after brilliantly opening the scoring through Chemsdine Talbi in the 67th minute.
Liverpool appeared shell shocked by Sunderland’s opener as the visitors closed in on a first win at Anfield since 1983.
But a Wirtz-inspired equaliser denied Sunderland of the three points that would have taken them into the top four.
Prior to their leveller, Liverpool were facing the prospect of back-to-back home defeats in the league for the first time since March 2021.
The point sees Arne Slot’s men provisionally leapfrog Manchester United into eighth place on 22 points while Sunderland sit in sixth position, a point clear of the Reds.
The result cements Sunderland’s excellent start to the season.
The Black Cats have created problems for the Premier League’s big boys this season having picked up a victory at Chelsea before holding leaders Arsenal to a 2-2 draw.
