Fire grab attention after 2026 WNBA Draft trade with Sun

The WNBA Draft in New York on Monday was critical for the Portland Fire as they hoped to acquire talented prospects to shore up their roster for their debut season.

The Fire made arguably the first surprise of the draft after selecting Iyana Martin of Spain as the seventh overall pick. Martin is fresh from a standout year with Perfumerias Avenida, earning the EuroLeague Women Young Player of the Year award.

In the second round, the Fire plucked another little-known player in Frieda Buhner of Germany as the 17th overall pick. The team then got Taylor Bigby of TCU as the 37th overall pick in the ensuing round.

Portland then traded Bigby and a 2027 third-round pick to the Connecticut Sun for 33rd overall pick Serah Williams of Connecticut.

The move quickly elicited varied reactions from fans.

“Iyana Martin is good, Frieda Buhner is good, and so is Serah Williams,” said @coolname1255710.

“R.I.P. Serah Williams staying in Connecticut. 2026-2026,” joked @divinewbb.

“What about the ‘Geno Effect,’ Serah Williams fell to the third round!” added @gfunkera882.

“I’m so happy for Serah Williams. I hope she sticks with the team,” commented @MYLaced.

“It’s actually not (a bad trade). Where was Serah Williams going to get playing time behind Brittney Griner, Olivia Nelson Ododa, Aaliyah Edwards, Aneesah Morrow, and Kennedy Burke?” asked @d22_dee.

Williams, a hard-nosed forward, had a one-and-one stint at UConn, averaging 6.7 points, 4.4 rebounds, and 1.3 blocks in a reduced role compared to her three years at Wisconsin. She helped the Huskies reach the Final Four in the NCAA Women’s Tournament.

Bigby, meanwhile, averaged 5.7 points, 1.9 rebounds, and 1.0 assists in her five-year college career. She also had stops at Oregon and USC before suiting up for TCU in the last two seasons.
