Fight erupts at end of heated Canada-Qatar World Cup match

Canada notched a historic win on Thursday night, defeating Qatar 6-0 in group play.

The lopsided nature of the match’s result, however, did not stop both teams from getting into it following the final whistle.

Players from both sides were seen pushing and shoving in an ugly scene on the field after Canada’s first-ever World Cup victory, which also took place at BC Place in Toronto.

Canada appeared frustrated by Qatar’s physicality in the match, which also saw one of the home side’s midfielders, Ismael Kone, carted off the field after being challenged by Qatar’s Assim Madibo.

But the night definitely belongs to Canada, thanks in large part to the exceptional performance of forward Jonathan David. The Juventus star put on a show in front of over 52,000 fans, who packed the stadium, as he scored not one, not two, but three goals to tie Argentina superstar Lionel Messi atop the race for the Golden Boot.

Cyle Larin put Canada on the board first with a goal (his second in the tournament) in the 16th minute, and David took it from there with his hat trick.

Nathan Saliba added to Canada’s offensive onslaught with a goal in the 65th minute. Qatar’s Mohamed Manai shot his team in the foot with an own goal in the 75th minute.

With their win, Canada now has a 1-1 slate and a +6 goal differential, leading all teams in Group B. They tied Bosnia-Herzegovina in their opener last week to the tune of a 1-1 score.

Up next for Canada is a match against Switzerland on Jun. 24 at BC Place.
