Fans are absolutely fuming about travesty of an international game rule change
The NFL’s global presence is expanding quickly, and so is the news about changes.
According to Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer, team owners are advocating for an increase in league-run international games from eight to ten by the 2027 season.
Despite the logistical challenges of scheduling global matchups nearly every week, owners see foreign markets as a vital opportunity for revenue growth, especially since domestic expansion has reached its limits.
However, this aggressive push for international games has left domestic fans frustrated due to a controversial new policy.
As reported by NFL Network’s Judy Battista on X, owners have officially approved the ability to play up to ten international games per season.
The real blow for season ticket holders is the elimination of protected home matchups.
NFL insider Ari Meirov noted on X that teams will no longer have the option to protect specific home games from being moved internationally.
Previously, franchises were allowed to secure two guaranteed home stadium games each year to prevent them from being moved overseas. With this rule now eliminated, the NFL can transfer any game to another country.
For local fanbases and season ticket holders, this unrestricted freedom for the league feels like a massive slap in the face, and that NFL news didn’t go well.
Social media immediately erupted with outrage, like @notcrotonix, who noted that ”they are ruining the greatest sport on the planet. it’s an evil world we live in.”
@chief_sief78 also noted if they have ”any more bad news to add?”
Before the 2027 expansion takes effect, the 2026 season will already feature a significant nine-game international slate across seven different countries.
While matchups such as the Colts and Commanders in London may rank lower initially, the schedule also includes high-profile global clashes.
The standout matchups feature the Patriots and Lions in Germany and the Cowboys and Ravens in Brazil.
The highlight of the season will be a highly anticipated Week 1 divisional showdown between the Los Angeles Rams and the San Francisco 49ers in Australia.
