Ex-Nets F Cameron Johnson reveals the only Knicks champion he cheered for

The New York Knicks gained closet fans during their NBA Finals title run. Academy Award winning actor Matthew McConaughey is one reacting to their victory over the San Antonio Spurs. Yet even the champs turned old rival from the Brooklyn Nets Cameron Johnson into someone cheering for a certain Knicks player.

Johnson wasn’t team Jalen Brunson. Nor was on the bandwagon for Karl-Anthony Towns. But the former Nets forward revealed why he secretly cheered for Mikal Bridges.

“Mikal was a big part of my career early on,” Johnson explained on his Old Man and Three podcast. “And the reason why they called us ‘The Twins’ was because every workout, every lift, every film session, we were always together. And then when we got on the court, we practically played the same position.”

Johnson adds how Bridges was always a “day one” friend of his. The former Phoenix Suns duo even trained in past summers. So Johnson needed to briefly put aside his personal disdain for the Knicks.

“As a former Net, I’m not going to cheer for the Knicks period. But I cheer for Mikal,” Johnson said.

Johnson chose to cheer for one singular Knicks star. This Knicks team still brought fans together especially in the Big Apple.

Famed singer Billy Joel, well known for his 1976 hit “New York State of Mind,” shouted out owner James Dolan. Actor Vin Diesel joined McConaughey in praising the Knicks, though Diesel nearly dropped a more emotional post celebrating the win. WWE superstar Roman Reigns acknowledged the Knicks as champs.

Now a past rival in Johnson couldn’t help praise one important piece of this NYK run.
