Ex-Bills HC Sean McDermott gets real on relationship with Josh Allen after firing

The Buffalo Bills announced they were firing Sean McDermott as head coach in mid-January. While he is no longer with the franchise, McDermott revealed that no matter what, his connection with Josh Allen will always be a strong one.

While guest appearing on the NFL Network’s pre-draft show, the 52-year-0ld former head coach admitted he would be ecstatic for Allen if the star quarterback won a Super Bowl. McDermott followed that statement up by talking about his relationship with Allen and how special a human he is.

“I’ll be the happiest person on the planet for Josh,” said McDermott after being asked how he’d react to Allen winning a Super Bowl. “The roles of the head coach and the star player, or the star quarterback in this case, there’s a lot of parallels… They’re both leadership roles in a lot of ways…

“He has a lot of responsibility and a lot of pressure, but he carries it extremely well. I think one of the best compliments that I can give Josh is he’s a normal person, and we all root for people who are just like us.”

Sean McDermott was the head coach of the Bills for nine years. He owned a 98-50 regular-season record, leading Buffalo to eight winning seasons during his tenure. However, Buffalo never got over the hump to win a Super Bowl under McDermott. Even with Josh Allen under center, who is viewed as one of the league’s best quarterbacks right now.

The Bills hired former offensive coordinator Joe Brady as Sean McDermott’s replacement this offseason. With an already busy offseason, Buffalo has an opportunity to add some exciting young talent to the roster in the 2026 NFL Draft.
