ESPN’s Warriors source drops mic on new Steve Kerr deal

On Saturday, it was reported by ESPN NBA insider Shams Charania that the Golden State Warriors and head coach Steve Kerr had agreed to a two-year deal that would bring him back to the Bay Area. The news comes after a tough 2025-26 season that saw the Warriors miss the playoffs for the second time in three years, shrouding their future in a bit of uncertainty.

Now, more information has come to light about why the financial aspect of the deal was never a concern for the Warriors when it came to re-signing Kerr.

“It was never going to be about money,” one team source said, per Shams Charania, Anthony Slater, and Ramona Shelburne of ESPN. “We had to make the best basketball decision.”

While details of Kerr’s compensation have not been made public yet, Charania did report on SportsCenter that “…it keeps him the highest-paid coach in the NBA moving forward… The conclusion was Steve Kerr wanted to coach, Joe Lacob and the Warriors welcomed him.”

To say that Kerr has had a successful tenure with the Warriors would be a major understatement, as the head coach has helped usher in a modern NBA dynasty, winning four championships with Golden State, the most recent of which came in 2022.

In the last few seasons, fans have started to grow impatient with Kerr’s seeming inability to balance making his veterans, namely Stephen Curry and Draymond Green, happy while still allowing younger players the opportunity to come into their own, causing some to wonder whether a new face might be the best idea for the Warriors moving forward at head coach.

However, by re-signing Kerr, the Warriors seem to be doubling down on trying to wring whatever they can out of the twilight years of this current era.
