England fans involved in furious punch-up in New York on night of World Cup defeat

There were unsavoury scenes in New York following England’s 2-1 loss to Argentina with fans involved in post-match scuffles.

The Three Lions crashed out of the World Cup at the semi-final stage in another heart-breaking episode for them.

And some supporters were not too happy about the result as they lashed out at fans in the Big Apple.

It marks a wholly disappointing end to England’s bid to win the 2026 World Cup.

Thomas Tuchel then rang the changes to adopt a more defensive approach, and that only invited pressure on the England defence.

Nico Gonzalez forced Jordan Pickford into action and Alexis Mac Allister struck the woodwork either side of the second-half hydration break.

And with five minutes of normal time to go, Enzo Fernandez got the better of Pickford from 25 yards.

Lautaro Martinez then bagged the eventual winner, heading in an inch-perfect Lionel Messi cross to send Argentina into the 2026 World Cup final.

The South American powerhouse will face Spain in Sunday’s showpiece after La Roja secured a 2-0 win over France in Tuesday’s semi-final showdown.

‘We got too passive after we scored’

England boss Tuchel has taken responsibility for the semi-final defeat to Argentina in Atlanta.

Speaking after the game, he said: “Disappointed, we were so close, but we got too passive after we scored and conceded a lot of chances.

“We couldn’t turn the ball possession around and we conceded so, so many crosses, chances and shots. We were close but couldn’t keep the level up after we scored.”
