ENG vs NZ 2026: MCC shares statement after Lord's pitch falls short of expectations

The Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) have shared a statement commenting on the pitch after the first Test between England and New Zealand ended in less than four days. The conclusion of the game could have been a day earlier had it not rained on Day 3. 

The MCC acknowledged that the pitch did not meet the standards of the iconic Lord's Cricket Ground, which hosted the 150th Test match in its glorious history. 

"We recognise that the pitch for this Test has shown more variable bounce than we would have wanted. We hold ourselves to the highest standards and are naturally frustrated when a surface falls short of those expectations." read the official statement from the MCC.

The authority also shared the reasons behind a pitch that played two-paced throughout the Test match. The MCC believes that the sudden change in weather in the days leading up to the game. They will now try to find a solution so it does not happen again. 

MCC invests significantly each year in the preparation of the main square at Lord's, as well as in research, technology and expertise aimed at producing pitches that provide a fair and consistent contest between bat and ball. The unusually hot and dry weather during may, followed by wetter conditions in the lead-up to the match, presented a number of challenges in preparing the pitch. However, we fully recognise the need to act quickly. We will remain fully focused on applying all aspects of pitch development and improvement as outlined in our recently published MCC Cricket Strategy 2026-29," the statement continued. 

England secured an emphatic 115-run victory over New Zealand to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series. Chasing 254 runs in the fourth innings, the Black Caps were bundled out for a mere 138 after Gus Atkinson managed to grab yet another five-wicket haul at Lord's. 

It was, however, the returning Ollie Robinson who was declared the Player of the Match for his seven-wicket haul across the Test match. The Sussex captain ended the first innings with figures of 5 for 39, which included taking three wickets in the first over that he bowled. 

The second Test in the series will take place commencing on Wednesday, June 17, at the Oval.
