Emmitt Smith applauds Cowboys’ ‘quiet’ offseason after years of drama

Over the years, the Dallas Cowboys have become synonymous with drama and constant headlines during the offseason. Whether it was the Dak Prescott contract situation, the Micah Parsons trade drama, or other things, Jerry Jones and his team are always on the front pages during the offseason.

In 2026, that hasn’t really been the case. The Cowboys dealt with some minor drama, mostly centered around star wide receiver George Pickens and his looming contract extension. While that situation isn’t completely settled, Pickens has signed his franchise tag and will play on that during the 2026 season, with a contract extension likely coming at some point.

Outside of that, the Cowboys haven’t been in the news all that much, especially compared to some of their past offseasons. That could very well be a good thing for a team that has high hopes in 2026.

Franchise legend Emmitt Smith agrees that the silence is a positive for the Cowboys. He spoke about that to USA Today, as shared by Grant Gordon of NFL.com.

“I think the bigger sign is that it’s been a slow, quiet offseason, the way it needs to be,” Smith said earlier this offseason. “Now that we’ve gotten George Pickens out of the way, quietness is important, because it says the focus is where it needs to be, on the field.”

The Cowboys had one of the best offenses in football last season, but they could never get enough stops on defense to make it matter. The offense should still be near the top of the league with Prescott, Pickens and Lamb all back next season, but the defense will be the difference-maker for Dallas in how far it can go.

The Cowboys hired former Eagles assistant Christian Parker as their new defensive coordinator, a move that is expected to help them take a massive step forward on that side of the ball. If it has the intended effect, this Cowboys team could find itself at the top of the NFC East and right in the mix in the NFC playoffs in January.
