Emi Martinez releases statement on Argentina future days after World Cup final defeat

Argentina goalkeeper Emi Martinez is considering his international future following Sunday’s World Cup final defeat.

The 33-year-old lined up for his country in the 1-0 defeat to Spain that saw Argentina relinquish their grip on the trophy they won in 2022.

Martinez earned his 67th cap in Sunday’s loss  after having played every minute of Argentina’s World Cup campaign, keeping two clean sheets.

The Aston Villa stopper played a key role in Argentina’s success in Qatar almost four years ago, winning the prestigious Golden Glove award as the standout goalkeeper.

Reflecting on his country’s failure to successfully defend the trophy, Martinez took to social media in sombre fashion.

“I dreamt we’d win it again, I dreamt of bringing it back to Argentina and making history once more,” Martinez wrote on Instagram.

“The truth is, the pain is hard to explain. There are many things to reflect on and how to move forward, and if it’s time to step aside.

“I’m so sorry, I truly tried my best to help my country and my teammates.”

Martinez was the recipient of the Yashin Trophy, awarded to the world’s best goalkeeper at the Ballon d’Or awards, in both 2023 and 2024.

He joined Aston Villa from Arsenal in 2020 and helped the Midlands club achieve Europa League glory in May.

A change of scenery?

His contract at Villa Park runs until 2029 but Martinez has told Juventus he wishes to join them this summer.

However, Juve have yet to submit any kind of offer for the player.

That would likely see the Old Lady table a loan offer with an obligation to buy.

He has played for Aston Villa since 2020 and has a contract until 2029, but has been linked to a move to Italian side Juventus this summer.

Martinez has become a leader in the dressing room alongside established stars such as Lionel Messi, Leandro Paredes and Nicolas Otamendi.

And with Messi expected to call time on his international career, Martinez following suit would serve as a huge blow to La Albiceleste.

There could be another key exit in the coming months with boss Lionel Scaloni hinting at his exit when his contract expires at the end of the year.

Scaloni has led to Argentina to two Copa America titles as well as their third World Cup success.
