EFL manager leaves club after just six games in charge

Barrow are on the hunt for a fourth permanent manager this season after Dino Maamria departed the club.

The decision was made less than 24 hours after a 2-0 loss to Bristol Rovers.

It was the League Two side’s fourth defeat from six games under Maamria, who was only appointed on February 11.

The result left Barrow sitting 22nd in the fourth tier with 28 points and outside of the relegation zone only on goal difference.

Barrow’s statement on Maamria

“Barrow AFC can confirm Dino Maamria has left the club today,” the club said in a statement.

“We would like to thank Dino for his efforts and wish him well for the future.

“Sam Foley, supported by Simon Ireland and David Worrall, will take the team until the end of the season.

“We recognise that this has been a very disappointing season with far too much managerial change. As the Board of Directors, we understand that the buck stops with us. We believe this change gives us the best chance of remaining in the football league.”

Barrow added a supporters Q&A session will go ahead as planned on Friday, with members of the board due to attend and answer questions.

With Maamria now gone, Barrow will need a fresh face in the dugout yet again.

Managerial merry-go-round at Barrow

The Bluebirds began the campaign with Andy Whing in charge, but he was axed on December 10.

Paul Gallagher was announced as Whing’s successor on January 2.

However, five defeats in as many games forced Barrow’s hand as the 41-year-old departed the club on February 11, with Maamria appointed the same day.

Whoever takes the reins from Maamria will have a tricky task to preserve Barrow’s status as a Football League club.

How have Barrow fared since promotion from the National League?

Barrow got promoted to the fourth tier in 2020 having won the National League in the 2019/20 campaign.

Finishes of 21st and 22nd ensued in Barrow’s first and second seasons as a League Two club.

But their fortunes were transformed in the 2022/23 season as Pete Wild oversaw a stunning ninth-place finish.

The Bluebirds improved on the placing the following term as they ended it in eighth.

However, they dropped back down the table last season and ended it in 16th.

Barrow’s next game on Saturday sees them host Accrington Stanley, with kick-off scheduled for 3pm.
