Marc Guehi has got it good.

The Manchester City defender has enjoyed a meteoric rise over the past few years but it is of no surprise due to the company he has been keeping.

It would be unfair to put all of his success down to those around him. Frankly, Guehi has been sparkling for club and country.

He was arguably England’s best player at Euro 2024 and played a key role in Crystal Palace’s run to FA Cup glory in 2025.

After seeing a deadline move to Liverpool slip through his fingers last summer, the centre-back finally got his big move… but to Manchester City.

And it was under the guidance of Pep Guardiola that Guehi added a second consecutive FA Cup to his growing list of accomplishments.

All while that was going on, the 25-year-old has been quietly cementing his place in Thomas Tuchel’s England team.

The German tactician has been overly complimentary of Guehi, referring to the defender as the ‘best teammate possible’ during last September’s World Cup qualifiers.

Guardiola echoed those sentiments during his short stint working alongside the former Eagles captain.

“An incredible signing,” Guardiola said of the centre-back in May. “His focus in every single detail in the game, in his private life, to be a professional is unbelievable.

And the feeling is mutual when it comes to Guehi’s feelings about the two former Champions League-winning managers.

His time alongside Guardiola has come to a premature end following Guardiola’s Manchester City exit last month.

But Guehi has seen enough from working alongside both Guardiola and Tuchel to know that while both managers have differing approaches, their football philosophies have similar traits.

Ahead of England’s final World Cup warm up match against Panama on Wednesday, Guehi was asked about the differences of working under the two coaches.

“It’s actually not that different, to be honest,” Guehi responded. “They’re both, in a way, saying the same things.

“Similar messages, I’d say, it’s just done in a different way, whereas Thomas has come from a place of that German football. It’s very, let’s say, rock and roll.”

Guehi is in line to start the Three Lions’ first World Cup group game against Croatia next week.

Who he lines up alongside in the heart of England’s defence remains a mystery with outgoing Manchester City teammate John Stones and Aston Villa’s Ezri Konsa in contention for a starting berth.

Should Guehi be handed one of the two starting spots for the clash in Arlington, Texas then he knows he will be in good hands alongside one of the other two centre-backs.

Asked what qualities Stones and Konsa have to complement his own skillset, Guehi told talkSPORT: “I’d say they’re both still both fantastic players. It’s hard to say because they’re both coming from a school of managers that like to put on the ball and they’re both amazing ball players and centre-halves.

“But both have unbelievable awareness defensively and show their qualities each and every game as leaders in their own different ways. So, yes, they possess different things, but I think overall, fantastic quality.

“I think John’s a fantastic professional and will always be in the best shape possible for whatever game or whatever competition.

“It was nice to actually play with him. It’s been a long time and we’re both looking forward to it. We didn’t get the opportunity at City, which was a shame, but to be fair, it doesn’t really matter.

“Whoever plays, the most important thing is just to do the best for the team and try to make England fans proud.”
