Eagles legend’s son to attend rookie minicamp
The Philadelphia Eagles are set to bring in Luke Akers, the son of franchise great David Akers, for their rookie minicamp, with the undrafted Northwestern specialist also accepting an invite from the Chicago Bears.
Luke spent six years in college football, splitting time between UCLA and Northwestern. With the Wildcats, he served as the primary punter for three seasons after beginning his college journey with the Bruins. Over his entire college career, he accumulated 180 punts and averaged 42.9 yards per attempt.
In his final two seasons (2024 and 2025), Akers also handled kicking duties for Northwestern, converting 13 of 17 field-goal attempts with a long of 43 yards, while going a perfect 13-for-13 on extra points. During the 2025 season specifically, he recorded 36 punts for 1,619 yards, averaging 45.0 yards per punt, including nine punts of 50-plus yards and a long of 59. He also pinned opponents inside the 20-yard line 10 times and handled 40 kickoffs with 22 resulting in touchbacks. His performance earned him All-Big Ten Honorable Mention recognition this past season.
Luke’s father, David Akers, is one of the most accomplished specialists in the Eagles’ history. He played with Philadelphia from 1999 to 2010, scoring 1,323 points, still a franchise record. He was a six-time Pro Bowl selection, a two-time first-team All-Pro, led the NFL in scoring twice, and is enshrined in the Eagles Hall of Fame. Over his 16-year NFL career, which began in 1998 with Washington and included stops in San Francisco and Detroit before retiring in 2013, he became one of the league’s most decorated kickers.
For Philadelphia, the kicker position is still unsettled, with Jake Elliott coming off two inconsistent seasons, hitting 77.8% and 74.1% of his field goals over the past two years, including 4-of-8 from beyond 50 yards in 2025. Meanwhile, punter Braden Mann signed a four-year, $14 million contract this offseason, which also factors into the Eagles’ roster construction as they approach camp.
