Eagles DC Vic Fangio shares blame for 2025 struggles with offense

The Philadelphia Eagles had a bit of a down season in 2025 after winning the Super Bowl the year before, and the offense took the brunt of the heat for it. Some of that criticism was deserved, as Jalen Hurts company struggled to get going for most of the year.

On the other side, the Eagles had one of the best defenses in football for most of the season. Philadelphia has stars at all three levels on defense and traded for Jaelan Phillips in the middle of the season. Vic Fangio also continued to prove his worth as one of the best defensive coordinators in all of football.

However, Fangio still sees room for improvement from the way that his unit played last season. On Thursday at OTAs, Fangio talked about the room for improvement that he sees on his defense, via Zach Berman of The Athletic.

“In some ways, I thought we were very good, had some very, very good games,” Fangio said, per Berman. “And there’s the narrative out there that if the offense could have been better, we would have had a more successful season, but we could have played better too on defense in certain games and we need to take that mindset moving forward.”

The numbers back up Fangio’s claim. While Philadelphia was a very good defense, there was still some room to join the truly elite units of the league according to the stats. For the season, the Eagles finished as the fifth-best scoring defense in the NFL and the 13th-best in terms of total defense. The Eagles were ninth in EPA per play, so this was solidly a top 10 unit still.

The offense was a different story. Philadelphia was middle of the pack in points per game and 24th in the NFL in yards per game last season while sitting in the average to below-average range in both EPA and success rate.

There’s no question that this Eagles team has the talent to be a Super Bowl contender on both sides of the ball. If the defense takes the leap Fangio is looking for, it would be no surprise to see Philadelphia right back in the mix at the end of January.
