Dustin Johnson spirals out of US Open contention with putrid bunker shots on 15

The second round of the US Open is not going according to plan for Dustin Johnson. Johnson was sitting at even and seemingly had a realistic opportunity of making the cut heading into hole 15 at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club in New York. However, Johnson fell apart in the bunkers, video via US Open.

Johnson mis-hit his first shot out of the bunker on 15. The ball bounced off the hill in front of the green and rolled back into the bunker. He still had an opportunity to potentially save the hole from becoming a disaster if he could come through with a great next shot, but that is not what occurred. Instead, Johnson overshot the green.

Johnson ended up shooting a plus-seven for the day and is now plus-three overall through the first two days of the tournament.  The projected cut line is plus-two at the moment.

Golf is a challenging game. Even the best golfers in the world can fall apart on the course. Shinnecock is a challenging course as well as even the PGA Tour’s best golfer, Scottie Scheffler, has endured ups and downs so far.

It will be interesting to see who emerges at the top of the leaderboard after the second round on Friday. Rory McIlroy remains among the favorites after his previous Masters win. McIlroy has played respectable golf up to this point. However, Wyndham Clark currently leads all golfers with a -7 as of this story’s writing.

There is plenty of golf left to be played as the tournament continues.
