Dream’s Angel Reese drops NSFW revelation on wild gesture vs. Sparks

COLLEGE PARK – With 3:26 left in the fourth quarter, the Atlanta Dream and Los Angeles Sparks were in a tie game, and it felt like the away team had all of the momentum. After going through most of the quarter with only one made field goal, someone had to step up, and it was no other than Angel Reese.

Jordin Canada found Reese open in the corner, and she knocked down a 3-pointer that took a few rolls before it fell in to give the Dream a 3-point lead. From there, Reese found a fan – or a heckler – sitting courtside, and she pointed and shouted at him after every Dream basket until the end of the game, as they won 101-92.

After the game, Reese was asked why she gave the fan the phone gesture. The answer was simple.

“It was somebody talking s–t on the sideline,” Reese said.

Reese’s 3-pointer was the catalyst for the Dream being able to pull out the win against the Sparks. After having the lead for most of the game, the Dream got stagnant in the fourth, and it helped the Sparks get back into it. After Reese hit the 3-pointer, the floodgates had finally opened.

“I was happy. That was a big bucket. All I remember is me just crashing the [offensive] board, and Angel [Reese] knocked it down, squeezed the target,” Allisha Gray said. “She works on that [shot] every single day after practice, before practice.

“People really, really don’t see the type of work that she puts in. Like, she’s a superstar, but a very unselfish superstar, and like she really puts in the work. I’m not surprised she hit that three because it’s just like she works on it every single day.”

It’s a shot that Reese has been working on a lot since coming to Atlanta, and Karl Smesko has been by her side every pregame, helping her with her form and follow-through.

“She’s definitely been working on it since training camp,” Karl Smesko said. “She’s improved a good deal. It looked like a really good release on that one where she got her follow-through the way she wanted to do it. To do it with a tie game late in the fourth quarter to be the one that you really get that you’ve been working on for months to help you win a game, that was definitely a fun moment for everybody.”

It wasn’t only the shot the Dream needed, but it was a win that felt needed as well. After going through a shooting slump over the past few games, the Dream shot 50% from the field in this one, knocking down the shots they were supposed to at the right time.

“We hit the last couple of threes, and we got over 30% from 3, and it had been a while since we had done that. So that feels good. We’re still not getting our 36%, 40% type 3-point percentage, so we’re going to have to win possessions,” Smesko said.

Overall, it was a better game for the Dream as a whole, and it’s something they want to carry over as the All-Star break approaches.

“I think every team in the league is looking to get better right now,” Smesko said. “I don’t think anybody’s really happy or ecstatic with where they’re at. Whoever gets the most improvements over the second half of the season is going to have a real advantage going into the playoffs.”
