Donovan Mitchell celebrates Mets beating Yankees before Cavs-Knicks ECF

Donovan Mitchell has finally conquered one of his long-time demons. The Cleveland Cavaliers star made it to the Conference Finals for the first time in his career after beating the Detroit Pistons in the second round. It’s a big day for the former first-round pick. However, something happened that is just as important for Mitchell as the ECF appearance: his New York Mets beat their cross-town rivals.

Mitchell was wrapping up his pre-Conference Finals press conference with a few words. The Cavs star was talking about how he and his team would be prepared for the New York Knicks in the ECF. As he was getting ready to leave, though, Mitchell cheekily added that his favorite MLB team, the Mets, beat the New York Yankees today.

Mitchell, who is from New York, is well-known to be a fan of the Mets. The Cavs star has not been shy in letting people know where his allegiances lie in the Subway Series as a New York native. The Mets recently beat the Yankees in their most recent four-game series 3-1. Their last win of the series was a walk-off win in extra innings. They currently have a 20-26 record and sit at the bottom of the NL East.

Mitchell and the Cavs are advancing to their first Conference Finals since the LeBron James era. It hasn’t been easy: the Cavs have gone through two Game 7s in this postseason run to get to this spot. They are heavily considered to be underdogs against the Knicks, but they’ve faced worse odds before.

As for Mitchell, the star guard is entering his first Conference Finals since he was drafted in 2017. Mitchell had come close before during his time with the Utah Jazz, but the cards never quite aligned for the All-Star guard. Now, he has a chance to make his first Finals appearance.
