Donald Trump’s candid reaction to Indiana Football HC Curt Cignetti’s NIL joke
Indiana football just capped off the greatest season in program history with a trip to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, but it was a joke about the “New Era” of college sports that stole the show.
On Monday, Donald Trump welcomed head coach Curt Cignetti and the undefeated national champions to the White House. Cignetti, never one to shy away from a bold statement, leaned into the microphone and offered a deal the former president couldn’t ignore. The coach joked that he’d let the president “keep the [National Championship] trophy for an NIL contribution.”
Trump, a man who knows a thing or two about negotiations, didn’t miss a beat. “I’ll do that for NIL,” he responded with a grin. “Boy, did the courts screw that up.”

The lighthearted exchange highlighted the massive shift in the collegiate landscape, but the real business was handled back on January 19. The Indiana University football team completed a historic 16-0 season by taking down the Miami Hurricanes in a 27-21 thriller at Hard Rock Stadium.
Star quarterback Fernando Mendoza was the engine of that victory. The Las Vegas Raiders’ future No. 1 overall pick finished the night with 16 completions for 186 yards. While he was surgical through the air, his biggest play came on the ground, a 12-yard rushing touchdown that gave the Hoosiers the cushion they needed to secure their first-ever national title.
“Safe to say that’s the greatest record in college football history,” Cignetti told the crowd on the South Lawn. It’s hard to argue. Before Cignetti arrived, the Hoosiers were a Big Ten afterthought; now, they’re trading barbs with presidents and hoisting gold.
With Cignetti set to drive the pace car at the upcoming Indianapolis 500, the victory tour is far from over. For a program that went from “why not us” to “number one,” the NIL era seems to be treating them just fine.
