Dodgers’ Dave Roberts reveals when, where Tommy Edman will play after rehab assignment
The Los Angeles Dodgers finally have a clear Tommy Edman return plan after his lengthy injury absence. Dave Roberts said Monday that Edman will join the active roster Tuesday and start Wednesday at Dodger Stadium.
The update ends a 74-game absence for Edman, who completed an 11-game rehab assignment with Triple-A Oklahoma City. His return gives Los Angeles another versatile, switch-hitting option as the club continues defending back-to-back World Series titles.
The Dodgers can now fold him back into the lineup without asking him to carry too much immediately after a long layoff offensively.
Edman missed the entire 2026 regular season while recovering from right ankle surgery. The November procedure repaired a ligament and removed bone spurs, so the Dodgers handled his ramp-up carefully before bringing him back.
Dodger Insider, a popular Dodgers fan page, posted Roberts’ update on X, formerly Twitter, and reported Edman will move directly into the starting lineup this week.

The timing is relevant for a Dodgers team sitting at 45-27 with a seven-game lead in the National League West. Edman gives Roberts another proven option while Los Angeles manages workload, matchups, and roster balance.
Roberts plans to use Edman at second base, third base, and left field. This flexible role should help protect his ankle while giving the Dodgers another bat who can pressure left-handed pitching and cover multiple defensive needs.
However, the activation creates a roster crunch. Los Angeles must clear space on both the 26-man roster and 40-man roster, which could affect Kiké Hernández, Alex Freeland, or Santiago Espinal.
For the Dodgers, the biggest takeaway is clear. Edman will not return as a passive bench piece. The Dodgers’ manager expects the 31-year-old to start Wednesday in the series finale vs. the Tampa Bay Rays, giving the manager another way to manage matchups, rest regulars, and deepen an already dangerous roster.
